Selous

Few safaris in Tanzania evoke the essence of the African bush and the traditional safari experience quite like Selous Game Reserve. Four times the size of the Serengeti, little-known Selous is Africa’s largest expanse of uninhabited land and remains the largest protected wilderness reserve on the continent.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Selous amazes with the sheer diversity of its landscape – ranging from plains split by numerous river channels to hot volcanic springs and swamps and marshes. And with around 60,000 elephant, more than 100,000 Cape buffalo, some 18,000 hippo, approximately 1,300 endangered wild dog and globally significant populations of black rhino, Selous is clearly the perfect home for this enormous and diverse population of wildlife.

Flowing all the way to the Indian Ocean, the Rufiji River is the lifeline of Selous’s success and during the dry season great numbers of animals can be found along its banks. A raucous array of birdlife animates the hippo and croc-filled stunning marshes and riverine vegetation of the Rufiji Delta.

Game drives will keep you captivated for hours but it is worth getting out of the vehicle and exploring Selous, on foot.

Boating safaris on the Rufiji River or the many arbitrary lakes and channels that crisscross Selous will reveal massive pods of hippo, nests of crocodile, and with more than 440 species of birds, fantastic bird sightings will be the order of the day.

The Selous is home to three of the finest camps in Tanzania, a couple of which would stake their claim as the best in all of Africa!  Browse our properties in this area to see more.
