East Africa offers incredible chimpanzee trekking experiences in the thick forests of Rwanda and Uganda. Family groups live high in the canopy and catching your first glimpse of one crashing through the forest after hiking into their territory is nothing short of astonishing.
As part of your safari activities in Uganda, you can trek in Queen Elizabeth National Park to a group of habituated chimpanzees or the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where you could also catch a glimpse of olive baboons and the majestic colobus monkey.
Rwanda’s volcanic peaks in the Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest on the ridge between the Nile and the Congo rivers, with the added advantage of white water rafting, and the Cyamudongo Forest offer some of the best chimpanzee trekking. The forests are not only to habituated chimpanzees, but also a home for other primates, including the Ruwenzori colombus and the L’hoest’s monkey.
